Biodegradable Shoes Lined with Seeds Give Back to The Earth

OAT Shoes wins 2nd place at Amsterdam’s 2011 Green Fashion Awards.

Yes, you read correctly. A new line of shoes from Dutch footwear maker OAT is the first biodegradable pair of shoes, that we know of, that will also release tree seeds upon death. Gone are the days where choosing cool footwear meant sacrificing your “green” values. No, these shoes give back to the Earth in ways no other shoes can.

“Choosing green often means having to make concessions on appearance, functionality, price or convenience.” OAT says they’re brining an end to that. “The future of fashion lies in a reconciliation between nature and industry. OAT Shoes strives to lead the way to that future.”

OAT was also Amsterdam’s 2011 Green Fashion Awards runner-up. We’re pretty sure that runway presentation sealed the deal ;-)

    Now that is frickin’ cool.

  2. Totally. I want all my clothes, and all the packaging we use to do this. We don’t need seeds in everything, but it’s kind of a duh thing to make packaging that degrades nicely. I think one of the big chip makers started using biodegradable bags made from corn starch recently. Might have been Sun Chips, but don’t quote me on that.

  3. Jill Farrand Jill Farrand says:

Yeah, it was Sun Chips. Moving in the right direction!

  4. I love this!
Yes, it was Sun Chips BUT would you believe they are already phasing out the bags? Why? Because they’re noisy. Yes…you read correctly….they were just too NOISY for people. Sheesh.

  5. :-O NO WAY. Of all the dumb reasons… ugh.

  6. Jill Farrand Jill Farrand says:

I had heard that as well, Jess. They were very noisy, but are folks really eating chips in the middle of the night when people are sleeping? (Well, wait a minute…)… : )
